The TUM emphasizes the strategic importance of intelligent robotics by investing in the corresponding infrastructure and joint initiatives. The Munich Institute for Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI) was founded as an integrative research institute. With special living labs such as the KI.Fabrik, the newly founded Geriatronics Campus and the TUM Center for Embodied Laboratory Intelligence, MIRMI is ideally equipped to conduct targeted research in relevant application areas such as manufacturing, geriatric care, and laboratory and scientific automation.

In robotics research, KIT pursues a systemic approach that addresses basic and application-oriented methods for the holistic engineering of intelligent and learning, human-centered robotic systems. In the RIG, KIT will contribute to the science and engineering of AI-based robotics, to the development of a national roadmap for robotics in Germany, to the development of talent at high school, bachelor, master and PhD levels, to community building and to the development of plans for the continuation of the RIG.

Among other things, TU Berlin is involved in the Einstein Center Digital Future research centre, which focuses on IT research and innovation and includes over 50 new assistant professorships at universities and universities of applied sciences in Berlin, most of which are associated with TU Berlin. TUB will contribute to the science and technology for AI-based robotics, the infrastructure for AI-based robotics, benchmarking and competitions, the development of talent at Master and PhD level and the plans for the continuation of the RIG.

TU Darmstadt heads the Hessian Centre for Artificial Intelligence (hessian.AI) based in Darmstadt, where 48 professors of artificial intelligence conduct research into all important aspects of artificial intelligence and AI-based robotics. It also houses the Laboratory for Systemic Artificial Intelligence of the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) with three large research departments. TUDA is pursuing three projects of the Hessian Excellence Initiative on the topic of RIG (3rd Wave of AI, The Adaptive Mind, WhiteBox).

The University of Bremen conducts robotics research in a wide range of application areas such as ship robotics, logistics robotics, factory automation, retail robotics, autonomous driving, laboratory and household robotics. An important research focus is AI-based and cognitively supported robotics, which is organised within the framework of the Collaborative Research Centre EASE (Everyday Activity Science and Engineering). The PIs of the RIG work on cognitive robotics, software engineering for cognitive robots, manufacturing robotics, ship robotics, robot vision and factory-internal logistics robotics.

The University of Stuttgart is part of the International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems, the large interdisciplinary doctoral program of Baden-Württemberg s Cyber Valley, a vibrant ecosystem for AI and robotics research in Baden-Württemberg. The RIG PIs work in the fields of robotics and manufacturing, socially intelligent robotics, systems theory and robot control, system dynamics and large-scale robotics, robotics and legged locomotion, model-driven robotics software development, biomechanical systems and biorobotics, soft robotics and aerial robotics.

The Cluster of Excellence CeTI – Center for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop, one of three TUD clusters, is closely linked to the RIG and pursues the vision of enabling people to interact in real time with cyber-physical systems via intelligent wide area networks. In addition, the 6G-life research hub, the Konrad Zuse AI School of Embedded Composite Artificial Intelligence and the Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence as well as the AirMetro competence center also contribute to RIG-related human-machine cohabitation research.

UTN is a newly founded university in Bavaria. Its Department of Engineering Sciences was founded in 2022 and comprises a highly effective cluster for robotics and artificial intelligence. It offers cutting-edge research and teaching in the fields of robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data engineering and machine intelligence. It is known for its contributions to robot navigation, robot perception, robot learning and robot manipulation.

DLR is the German Aerospace Center and the German Space Agency. DLR’s Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics is characterized by a high degree of multidisciplinary and diverse expertise, including mechatronics, machine learning, robot vision, telerobotics, space robotics and medical applications, and places a strong focus on technology transfer. Examples of the institute’s pioneering work include lightweight robotic arms and multi-fingered hands as well as humanoid and medical robots. DLR’s main task within RIG will be the coordination of technology transfer and the involvement of German industry.

The MPI-IS conducts interdisciplinary research on perception, action and learning for modern robotic systems. The institute has two locations: the Tübingen site focuses on computer vision, machine learning, robot learning and reinforcement learning; the Stuttgart site specializes in telerobotics, physical human-robot interaction, medical robotics and soft robotics. The RIG PIs will conduct basic research in the fields of robot perception, soft robotics, human-robot interaction, medical robotics and robot learning.

The three Fraunhofer Institutes IPA (Stuttgart), IOSB (Karlsruhe) and IML (Dortmund) cover various application areas of robotics, including production, hazardous environments and logistics. The main tasks of the Fraunhofer Institutes within RIG will be the coordination of technology transfer, the involvement of German industry in RIG and the conceptualization and virtualization of the robotics laboratories.

DFKI has a unique research infrastructure with the Robotics Innovation Center in Bremen (maritime environments, space, production, rescue and rehabilitation) and the Smart Factory in Kaiserslautern (new models for production). One of DFKI’s priorities within the RIG will be to provide the infrastructure available in Germany for testing and collaboration: in particular the Maritime Exploration Hall and the Multifunctional Hall for industrial and space projects.
